Former President HE. Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom attended the lecture by ProfessorThariq Ramadan

Former President His Excellency Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom and wife, Madam Nasreena Ibrahim attended the lecture held in Islamic Centre last night. The lecture was by famous religious scholar Professor Tariq Ramadan

On behalf of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs of Maldives, President Maumoon awarded the Plaque of Appreciation to Professor Tariq Ramadan, after the lecture.

Following the event, President Maumoon and Madam Nasreena met with Professor Tariq, who were accompanied by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Ahmed Ziyad, Advisor to the Minister of Islamic Affairs Sheikh Mohamed Rasheed Ibrahim, Minister of Education Dr.Aishath Shiham and senior officials of the Islamic Ministry.

During the meeting, President Maumoon welcomed Professor Tariq to Maldives and extended sincere gratitude for the lecture. President Maumoon also mentioned Professor Tariq’s father Dr. Said Ramadan, who was a prominent scholar in Egypt. President Maumoon further said that he used to listen to Dr.Said’s lectures while he was a young man studying abroad in Egypt.

Professor Tariq inquired about efforts by government n civil society, to promote Islamic awareness in the country. He also inquired about political, economic and educational status of the Maldives. Professor Tariq informed about his plans to visit various regions of the Maldives. Professor Tariq said in the meeting that his family and himself were profusely happy that they visited the Maldives.
